What we trim

We work on the everyday hedges found in Berkshire gardens: boundary hedges along the front of a property, screening hedges between neighbours, low ornamental hedges around borders and paths, and overgrown shrubs that have spread across a driveway or pavement. Each needs a slightly different approach. A formal hedge wants crisp, flat faces and a level top, while an informal screen is shaped more loosely so it keeps its natural look.

Pruning as well as trimming

Trimming takes the season's growth back to a tidy line. Pruning goes further, cutting back into older wood to reduce the size of a hedge or shrub that has got away from you, or to encourage denser growth lower down. Hard reductions are done carefully and at the right time of year so the plant recovers well rather than being left bare.

Nesting birds

Wild birds often nest in garden hedges, and it is an offence to damage or destroy an active nest. Before we cut, we check the hedge. If we find an active nest we will leave that section and come back later. This is why the main nesting months are a time for light, careful work rather than heavy cutting back. Clearing up afterwards

Hedge cutting creates a surprising amount of waste. Every job includes raking and sweeping up the cuttings from lawns, beds, paths and driveways, and we remove the green waste as part of our clearance service. You get a finished job rather than a half done one.

How often a hedge needs cutting

Fast growing hedges can need attention more than once a year, while slower hedges may be fine with a single cut. The simplest way to keep on top of it is to add hedge trimming to regular garden maintenance visits, so it happens at the right point in the season without you having to remember. If a hedge has been left for a few years, we can start with a one-off reduction and then keep it in shape from there.

Common hedge problems

Hedges that have not been cut for a few seasons tend to go wide and thin at the bottom while getting thick and heavy at the top. That shape blocks light from the lower branches, so the base goes bare. The fix is to cut the hedge slightly narrower at the top than at the base, so light reaches all of it. We shape hedges this way as standard.

Other problems we are often asked about include hedges growing over a public footpath, branches rubbing against a house or car, and screening hedges that have gaps. Trimming and pruning can deal with most of these, although gaps take time to fill in and may need a few seasons of careful cutting.

Safety and access

Tall hedges mean working at height, often over borders, greenhouses or next to a neighbour's boundary. We plan the cut before we start, protect plants and surfaces underneath, and use the right equipment for the height of the hedge. If a hedge sits on a shared boundary, it helps to let your neighbour know when we are coming so both sides can be tidied at the same time.

Hedges for businesses

Hedges around car parks, entrances and boundaries of commercial sites need to stay neat and must not block sight lines or walkways. Hedge trimming is included within our commercial grounds maintenance for offices, industrial units, new build developments and hospitality venues.
